Be a beacon*

On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
Contemplating a crime
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolour in the rain
Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat
- Al Stewart, Year of the Cat

I think that everyone has a musical beacon, whether they realize it or not. It's that song that gives us pause and somehow reassures us that everything is going to be all right.

There's nothing particularly remarkable about Al Stewart's Year of the Cat, but at some point way back when, it became my beacon. I've never owned a copy but I'd hear it on the radio or sound system while out shopping or driving, and it always came at a point in my life when I needed just a little comfort that brighter days were ahead.

Year of the Cat? Yes, I too wish that it could have been something just a little more cool, hip and/or classic, but then, I'm not known for my musical taste.

I've heard it in Ottawa, Waterloo, Guelph, Toronto, Princeton, and New York. It has pretty much slipped from the airwaves now and I've not heard it in San Francisco.

Then again, perhaps I've finally reached that better place.
