It's true. I am Canadian.

I have a slightly funny accent in that anything that ends in "out" sounds like "oot." Anything that has the "ou" combo sounds a little tighter than what you'd expect.

Confused? Have no clue what I'm talking a-boot?

Get it? About = a-boot.

I don't say "eh?" or "eh!" Never have, never will. My mother would have expired on the spot if an "eh" sprang from my lips. She had an accent of her own. It was a plummy British one that never waned even after many years of living abroad.

The thing about having an accent is that you don't really ever hear it. It wasn't until I visited Toronto, after living in the "Garden State" for three years, that I had any idea of what the whole "aboot" and up-talk thing was. What it was that people had been parroting back to me in conversations with a wink and a snicker. This was what they had been making fun of?

And make fun of they do. I spent most of the nineties on the east coast and another year out here in San Francisco. If I had a nickel for every lame joke and jab, well, I'd be a wealthy woman.

Between you and me, it's worn thin.

About? Beer? Mounties? Snow? Cold? Moose? Igloo in the backyard? Lumberjacks? Hockey? Curlers? William Shatner? Lorne Greene? Blame Canada? Terence and Philip? Loonies? I've heard them all.

So this is it. This is your chance. Let it all out. Hit me with your canuk jokes, baby.

But after this? We'll never speak of it again. Don't you dare. I don't want to have to get all kung fu on your ass.
