Curmudgeon in the making Fifteen Mother's Day spam and counting. Have I mentioned that I don't have a mother? Well, I did, it's not like I was hatched (despite what you might think). She didn't wander off and get lost, she passed away after a relatively brief battle with cancer quite some time ago. Do you think that retailers ever stop to consider the murmur of heart ache their missives might cause? Hallmark has much to answer for. Just what the world needs. Another manufactured holiday. So what? It's just Mother's Day, right? Father's Day follows and I'll have the same feelings of loss. What about Christmas and all the other holidays that people might not celebrate for one reason or another? We're all so wrapped up in ourselves that we don't stop and consider the other guy enough. Terry Pratchett will be reading & signing for "Thief of Time" tomorrow, 7 pm, at The Booksmith on Haight. Derek snapped the following at the beach on Saturday. Bruce Nauman, Self-Portrait as a Fountain, 1966-67/1970 Sunday? The eighties. |
