harrumph! still crazy!

I found the image at right sketched on a wall in Chinatown. I've always liked the simple lines, but have never stopped to think of what it represents
(if anything).

"What is it," we asked.

You answered.

... an alien whose plans were foiled when a nuclear silo fell on it.
Sunil

it looks like a fish without a head turned on its side. The small hole is where the spine would meet the skull. The Chinese traditionally remove the head of fish to create fish stocks, soups and other delicacies.
Chris

it is a lady wearing a wedding ring sitting inside a Californian diner eating the scraps out of the bottom of a chip packet, while a small African boy kneels observing her heavily powdered face.
chris

It reminds me of a pork chop, or some other part of an animal...
ohad

ok third time lucky! A apple core with three stones!!!!!!!!!
t

or a very curvy lady with a small head, no arms, no bust & three feet - ok maybe not
t

a lump of boiled ham with new potatoes [not mashed]
Matt <matt@frownland.com>

a set of bongo drums
t <tamara@theyard.ie>

Looks like an eye looking thru a keyhole with 3 fingers poking in to maintain balance as he/she, the subject, bends down to look into said keyhole.
mikee

Oh my gosh! It's so perfect! It solves all of the problems we've been having here with our research. Imagine the power!! We'll be rich!!! I can only hope we can get it patented before the men in black come. Thanks, Heather... I can't believe you have didn't know you had a picture of a perfectly workin_V^&*&{:}:"#:%{}&&^&@^&@
Lionfire <leon@lostrealm.com>

its a birds eye view of a football player with a tiny head receiving the ball.

matthew <matt@nothing.on.ca>

brad lau

Instructions on using a standard Door Knocker (tm) brand door knocker.
Paul <paul@phonezilla.net>

I'm Chinese living in Hong Kong. I believe it's a backbone segment of a cow. Chinese believe that marrow of animals is very good to health
smlai

It's my mother. Do you think that means anything, doctor?
jkottke

It's a one-eyed alien with two arms and ball-shaped hands proudly showing a picture of his no-eyed daughter.
Daniel <dbutler@yup.com>

a view from behind a headless, armless, legless mannequin wearing a corset sitting beside....i don't know
danielle

a pepper grinder of course
cd

a nuclear power plant with several trees and shrubs in front of it.
anno

A view from the back of Maria Von Trappe riding an inchworm hop-a-long kids toy.
Sammy Overbrook

I'd love to tell you but the last time I said anything about lines, the men in the white coats came and made me go to sleep. With extreme prejudice.
Cameron <webboy@graphicintentions.com>

a man peaking over the edge of a large piece of celery... at the other end lies a large tasty donut. the arrow caption (which is missing) should say "large piece of celery".
michael <michael@geminder.com>

"Daryl," I say. "Come here. What do you think this is?" He says, without hesitation, "I think it is a roll of toilet paper that has been squeezed with a mini space-ship next to it."
bruce (w/assistance from Daryl) <bdbarone@yahoo.com>

Its an upside down person holding his head, with a large belly button
Jayde <jayde@lissamail.com>

it's an elephant's foot. minus the rest of the elephant above the ankle.
james <dahlfred@bigfoot.com>

Well, it's upside down, for starters, as indicated by the arrow. If you turn it right-side up, it becomes obvious that it is a rough back-of-the-napkin sketch of Munch's The Scream, indicating at last the reason the poor fellow has been screaming all these years; his entire lower half (which is not shown in the printing) has been brutally lopped off. Ouch!
Mango Pudding Blues <mangopudding@vif.com>

arrow vs. animal foot. one of life's ubiquitous conflicts.
David <mothra26@home.com>

I believe that its a cut of meat. Most likely a "haunch" of some sort.
brian <brian@bshort.org>

one of the stacks at three mile island of course! with umm .. stuff at the bottom.
rks

the direction of a ball around the bumper of a pinball machine.
michaelbrown <elguapo@chatterwaul.com>

a camel toe... or some other ungulate appendage
steph

Pig's foot, obviously.
stewart

This is a prime cut of the big-toed three-fingered veldebeast: the drumstick.
Owen

While it could be a foot, it could be a root. But either way I agree - its a neat picture!
Carl <chuber@dial.pipex.com>

Looks confusedly anatomical to me, the top like a nipple, the bottom rather like human male genitalia. I think it's swell.
matt

I see a bug swimming in a cup with a murderous frog hungrily watching.
sarah <pyra80@hotmail.com>

It's a nick. Without a head. And a necklace. Without, uhm, lace?
Adam Sjøgren <asjo@koldfront.dk>

Bone? Leg bone?
Penny

Easy, it's an elephant's foot someone lopped off!
Yardsale <yardsale01@hotmail.com>

it's a mama and her little ones praying at some oddly shaped pagan stone monument...or protesting at a nuclear power plant...or it's a spool of thread with three odd shaped buttons that are about to be attached to a fabulous swing coat. yeah.
sharyn

it's a house with a small skylight made out of a tree stump. A rock is on either side of the door. The arrow points to the unique shape of the house which creates a natural A/Cm--the heat from the lower chamber rises through the skylight, while the cool air rests in the lower chamber.
ds hendler

it's most surely a home made out of the trunk of a tree... see the door, the lovely sculptures on each side of the door, and the rings on top that denote the age of the house. the rings do away with the need for a home appraisal.
lesley <webchica@hotmail.com>

As with any cylindrical object, it could be phallic in nature, but I'll say it's a pedestal with a wedding ring on it.
timo

it looks kinky
steve <steve@underdosed.com>

It looks like an elephant foot.
Alan

furniture from the 70's you only see in a thrift store
jason <blueroom@purephase.org>

chris <chris.marks@bentley.com>

It's a diagram of a severed elephant leg -- available at many fine shops in Chinatown -- showing where the best meat is.
Andrew

it looks like a chicken claw/foot
danica <danica@lovetaco.org>

It's obviously a smurf hut.
Haruna <Frustrated@frustrated.org>

Elvis Aaron Presley.
QBall <qball@localoladesignteam.com>

It's an elephant's foot with an ingrown toenail
