harrumph! still crazy!

Terrible beauty

Before the web and before print design, in what seems like another life, I studied painting. It was Brenda who turned me onto an Atlas of Rock-Forming Minerals in Thin Section. The full colour photographs provided wonderful departures for abstract work.

These thin sections of Calcite, Chloritoid and Hypersthene will give an you an idea of what I was looking at. I was and still am a fan of the thin section. The image above?

It's Anthrax. More specifically a "Thin Section Through B. anthracis Spores #2" from the Anthrax Vaccine Immunization Program, The Official DoD Anthrax Information Web Site. This image, or one quite like it, appeared on CNN's website a couple of weeks ago and I was entranced by the terrible beauty.
John Dowling, a fellow Guelph alum, travelled through Kosovo for six weeks last year. He's put a number of his paintings online.

"It is interesting that despite incidents of the various 'cleansings' of the past year, children still play at war, running about after one another with toy guns." Clean Fun, acrylic on card, 44 x 24.
How am I feeling? Who knew that a cold could be web safe? Oh, and I quack like a duck. Really, it's not that bad. Everything seems to pale in comparison to last year's e.coli extravaganza.
