Press Release

SAN FRANCISCO (HNN) -- Heather Champ Wednesday will undergo a colonoscopy -- a diagnostic examination to check for early signs of colon cancer -- and will transfer power to the pups during the procedure.

Champ made the announcement in the Cole Valley dog park Tuesday before boarding the N Judah for work. "This is a routine physical examination that will be done at UCSF/Mount Zion Hospital. I'm going to be sedated for a period of time and will transfer power to the pups during that time," she said.

Heather said she feels great and has had "no signs, no symptoms" of trouble. She said she is looking forward to "eating again tomorrow afternoon. Twenty four hours without food? I'll be an uber bitch."

Asked about the decision to transfer power, Champ said, "I did so, well, because someone has to be in charge."

Champ's doctors said the procedure would take about one to three hours and the ultra short-acting intravenous anesthesia propofol will be used.

UCSF/Mount Zion Hospital physician Dr. Terdiman said Champ is to be sedated because it puts patients more at ease during the procedure. "Most patients are completely unaware or indifferent to what's going on," he told reporters.

In preparation, Terdiman said Champ will take Fleet's phospho soda, a very concentrated solution that will be mixed with ginger ale or lemonade, to flush her system.

"We'll have her ready. Her colon will be ready," Terdiman said.

Champ said the only family history of colon trouble was the colitis suffered by her father, Cyril.

"I do recommend and urge that people get these precautionary tests," Heather said.
